Mormonism's Heavenly Mother remains a God of mystery, spurring questions from all sides

| Updated: May 9, 2021, 11:06 p.m. Mormonism’s Heavenly Mother has gone mainstream. She is the topic of a number of books on sale at Deseret Book, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has spawned essays (including an official one from the faith), poetry, a one-woman play, hymns, art shows, even academic debates. She has been embraced as part of the church’s Young Women theme, which was updated in 2019 to say: “I am a beloved daughter of Heav...

'God is my friend': What we can learn from how Joseph Smith dealt with adversity

Joseph Smith was born to poor tenant farmers in Vermont. At age 38, he was shot by a mob, in a jail, in a small town in Illinois. In between, he faced so much adversity that his story is almost the stuff of myth. Around age 7, Joseph endured a painful leg surgery that required him to use crutches for several years. At 14, he was rejected and ridiculed when he reported on his First Vision to a minister. When Joseph was 17, his older brother Alvin died—one of four brothers who predeceased him. ...

The connection between the titles of 'Saints' and the Wentworth Letter you may not have noticed

Editors note: Our bi-weekly Friday column, “ ,” explores some of the footnotes from remarks given by General Authorities and General Officers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In general conference there are the big moments: the announcement of temples, the calling of new General Authorities and General Officers, and the landmark addresses that change the Church and, sometimes our lives, forever. But one of my favorite things to keep an eye out for in general conference ar...

6 things I learned from the new Church podcast, 'The Priesthood Restored'

Now for a bit of background, I listen to a lot of podcasts, but the First Vision podcast is the only podcast I’ve ever listened to more than once. So when I got a notification of a new podcast mini-series coming from the Joseph Smith Papers, to say I was excited would be an understatem...

Mormon historian Richard Bushman on his doubts, beliefs and the challenges facing the LDS Church

| Updated: Jan. 1, 2021, 9:13 p.m. Nearing his 90th birthday, Richard Lyman Bushman is the godfather, or, should we say, the patriarch of Mormon history. As an emeritus history professor at Columbia University, with a chair of Mormon studies named in his honor at the University of Virginia, and the author of “Rough Stone Rolling,” the much-heralded biography of church founder Joseph Smith, Bushman is revered as a gentle, thoughtful scholar, who explores the past and present of The Church o...
