Saturday marks the opening of recreational Dungeness crab fishing for the 2023-2024 season.

Last week, a number of dedicated local anglers who have put in the time and effort as well as footing the fuel bills finally saw the bluefin tuna bite start to open up.

Anglers who fished the Monterey Bay area this week enjoyed a few days of very nice conditions.

This week featured some fine calm mornings for fishing. Even the afternoons didn’t get too windy, but mornings were best.

Anglers on the Monterey Bay this week relished very good conditions for a few days before a big west swell showed up, accompanied by some gale-force winds.

You might call Nick Rose-Rankin a lucky man. Last Saturday he won first place in the long-running Monterey Bay Kayaks Kayak Fishing Derby. And, he did it in a fashion never seen before in MBK Derby history. His winning entry was not just the fish of the day, but possibly the fish of a lifetime!

It looks like we’re in a weather window this week that will allow some fine autumn fishing.

Ocean fishing remains steady on Monterey Bay as we move into fall. Weather and sea conditions were somewhat confused last week, with some very windy days, some overnight winds and a mixed swell from the South and West.

Though windy conditions kept most boats fishing close to home, this week was mostly pleasant and quite productive for anglers around the Monterey Bay.

Monterey Bay area anglers continued to make the best of things this week despite confusing weather patterns, fish movements and upcoming government regulation changes.
