Trump? >> you know, people emerge and weaknesses are flushed out in a protracted primary like that. we have a lot of bright stars in our party and people are starting to meet them. >> sound to me a lot a lot of republicans i talked to in 2016. press pause on this conversation. because before we go to break and this is on a much more serious note. really terrible weather right now striking our neighbors in maryland. there are waves of thunderstorms unloading heavy rains and historic city which tr...

They have the votes, they can do it today if they want to. there is actually an interesting back story here which is centrist republicans saw this as a hail mary. there is thinking that if they try to force this issue and put leadership on the spot, potentially president trump would reopen these negotiations, get his wall, hes been tweeting about his wall, fix daca and avoid a potential shutdown happening this fall because the president says hes not going to sign a spending bill until he gets hi...

Fact that democrats walked away from putting together some sort of daca deal. and this -- democrats would rather have this be a 2018 midterm issue rather than actually going and solving it. the president has said very clearly, he wants to build a wall, and chain migration, get rid of the visa lottery and come up with a real plan to fix daca. he said not just the 690,000, he would have gone up to 1.8 million. the fact that democrats wouldnt take that deal shows they dont care about this issue. >>...

Weve had a number of elections the democrats shaved 15, 20 points off the election that trump won by. if you look back to the state races, youve had scores that were away from the trump margin in 2016 toward the democrats. do you look at that and say theres a wave coming? >> yes. nobodys had a good off year election since 2002 so i think republicans would be well advised to get ready. foreign fortunately, i think we are. we have good candidates, a good committee. we have good things to run on be...

Nervous in that situation. they felt while there was broad public december think for the dreamers, it start today look like democrats were prioritizing the dreamers over government funding and democrats then backed down a little bit. i wonder, betsy, maybe ill throw this to you. if this thing goes into limbo for the next few months where theres no deal on daca, trumps not moving toward a deal, but were also not getting deportations. is there any political risk there for democrats just in terms o...

I can tell you that a whole lot of young people who may be fighting for immigration reform and people who are not immigrants, but who care about immigrants, were not going to stop fighting for immigration justice no matter what trump has to say. let me tell you, personally, back when trump ended the daca program back in september, i knew he wasnt going to do anything about it. when he referred to the lot of the countries that people come from in such an ugly derisive way, he never had a plan to ...

That sound bite say people are coming in to take advantage of daca. as my colleague at the "wall street journal" said you cant take advantage of daca if youre coming in now or in the future. it is unclear if the president really understands this policy and i also think it is worth noting there have been potential deals in the past that he has said no to because they didnt do enough for family migration, they didnt do enough for the diversity visa lottery program. so, people have sort of tried to...
