Record temperatures hammer the state, especially in San Diego County, where the readings will range from the upper 80s to low 100s.

For the eighth consecutive day, California power regulators imposed a Flex Alert Wednesday urging residents to curb their electricity use to prevent rolling blackouts as a protracted heat wave continued to roast the Southland and most of the state.

The utility said the California Independent System Operator hasn't called for rolling blackouts but officials were warning customers to prepare as a precaution.

Many people said they are prepared for rolling outages but hope cutting back their energy use will take enough stress off of the power grid.

A sixth straight Spare the Air alert is in effect on Thursday, warning residents about unhealthy levels of smog in the Bay Area. A ninth consecutive Flex Alert has also been issued for Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Residents across the Tri-Valley on Wednesday were facing another day of sweltering temps, in the midst of a heat wave that is extending further into the week, with hundreds in Livermore and Dublin experiencing unplanned power outages.

To drive home the demand, alerts were sent to cell phones across the state urging people to "conserve energy now to protect public health and safety."
