Have necessarily noticed it until they were actually able to the mountains outside the windows. that dispenses one of the theories about what happened that it was a catastrophic failure in the air. that the tail fell off or a wing tore off. if that happened the plane would have come down more quickly in less controlled fashion. the debris would have been scattered over a much wider area on the ground. so if thats not what happened what are some other possibilities? well every analyst weve talked...

Descend from c no reported weather issues? %-pwasita mechanicalailure? pilot error? cnns tom foreman runs down some of the possibilities in our virtual studio. >> this descent was somewhat rapid but not so fast that anybody in the cabin would necessarily have noticed it until they were actually able to see the mountains right outside the windows. and that sort of dispenses one of the theories about what happened that it was a catastrophic failure in the air, that the tail or wing tore off. if th...

Point where they just can do nothing else with it. the plane plunged about 18,000 feet in some 80 seconds into the water, killing everyone on board. you can see the signature sign here. when the plane is completely uncontrollable and down it goes. lets consider another possibility here. this is a swiss airplane that went down off nova scotia. in this case they saw smoke in the cockpit. they started dealing with it and then it turned into a full-on fire. this was a slowly evolving problem. they k...

On the ground. so if that is not what happened what are other possibilities? every analyst said look at the flight pattern. it is a direct descent that seems very controlled a straight line no sign of anything unusual. that would be consistent with the crew trying to get to a lower altitude and deal with some sort of problem. but we still dont know what that problem would have been. and if they had this kind of control, why wouldnt they have been veered away and gone to some of the airports near...

They know about where they know why a plane went down. for example, they might look at something like alaska air. the alaska air crash was a big mechanical failure. there was a large thing called a gateway and it took away the how the plane was pitching up and down. look at what happened with that flight. as they fought to control the plane you could see it pitching up and down until finally they reached to point where they couldnt control it anymore. it plunged some 18,000 feet in a few seconds...

Odd jobs behind my house. i saw a plane passing by. i said "its a bit low." the when i discovered a plane had crashed, i thought of this right away. >> of course weve heard from those witnesses on the ground. just imagine what the horrified passengers must have seen. >> our tom foreman looks at that and what may have caused the plane to crash. >> reporter: this descent of somewhat rapid but not so fast that anybody in the cabin would necessarily have noticed it until they were actually able to s...

Captain. this is a workhorse plane, not a plane known to have tremendous problems. it has problems but nothing out of the ordinary as far as we know. if you look at the flight pattern of this plane, ashleigh, thats where the mystery comes in because everything looked normal. this is the speed of the plane here in red. the blue is the altitude of the plane. and all of this looks perfectly fine. along in here, the plane was going somewhere around 500 miles an hour plus which is perfectly normal. i...

If you fly into this portion of france and into the french alps here you can see they were flying at a serious mountainous area here. the alps are shorter than the rocky mountains but still substantial mountains out there and if we look at what happened in the course of this flight you can see if this is the correct reading and the truth is there can be some anomalies in here so well have to find out more details. red is the air speed and blue is the altitude. you can see that the flight pattern...

Search team says the plane missing airasia plane and its 162 passengers are likely at the bottom of the java sea they have not given up. the search will resume again at daybreak with a very expanded area. we have cnn tom foreman joining us from washington with a look at what search crews will be up against. >> they are up against an awful lot of territory. take a look at the flight pattern over the java sea. you see these models of planes. in reality they are merely specs out here. look at the s...
