The closure comes ahead of Deltopia, a yearly weekend event that in the past has drawn crowds of college students and partygoers to Isla Vista in early April.
often bad behavior. a student allegedly assaulted a police officer. when that student was arrested, the crowd did not like it. they began tossing rocks and bottles be. as you see here. the police of course responded by firing teargas and pepper spray. that s when the partiers started breaking windows, pulling down street signs and rocking cars. none tipped offense but they rocked them pretty heavily. by the time it was all over, five deputies and one campus police officers were injured. 44 other people were taken to hospitals and more are than 100 were arrested. listen to the sheriff s office. pretty disgusted and upset about it. i think there will be a lot of conversations in the future with community leaders and the public about putting an end to this sanctioned event or definitely changing it in the future. the students said it was the out of town students that caused all the problems. that very unclear right now. this is not a sanctioned event. it used to be called floatopia
ever heard of floatopia? all right. you re going to learn about it tonight. floatopia deflated. local officials say last year s overcrowded spring break event near santa barbara, california convinced them to close down the public beach. and cnn s sarah weissfelt spoke with students and police about how floatopia got out of hand. reporter: it s pretty much a day at the beach. the whole community comes together. we go down, float. people dance and people tan. it started out relatively small scale, about 200 or 300 people. and last year was actually the first year that it kind of boomed with facebook to around 10,000 people. and when i say facebook, i mean an event was created on the social networking site that invitations ended up being sent out throughout california.
