A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the first of five South Korean spy satellites on Dec. 1 before coming down for the company's 250th successful booster recovery.

South Korea confirmed Saturday its first military spy satellite had reached orbit after a successful SpaceX rocket launch and that communication was established with ground control.

South Korea had no military reconnaissance satellites of its own in space and has partially resorted to the United States spy satellites to monitor moves by North Korea. South Koreas Defense Ministry described the launch as successful, saying the satellite had a communication with an overseas ground station.
