Up to 39 people arrived in Dungeness on the Romney Marsh after being intercepted in the Channel in thick fog, taking the total crossing this year to over 18,000.

A total of 16 boats arrived on the south coast of England on Monday as smugglers on the French coast sought to capitalise on fine weather conditions.

In what fishermen described as a dangerous operation, the P&O ferry was told it had to make a detour, so that the naval ship could transfer 90 migrants to the UK Border Forces Typhoon vessel which was ready to take them to Dover.

The young man, dressed in a jacket, tracksuit bottoms and a life jacket, was seen looking jubilant as he made it onto dry land.

Since April, Royal Navy vessels (pictured towing small boats) have escorted all but one of the boats operated by people smugglers, according to official figures.
