Prime Minister Rishi Sunak watered down Britain's plans to tackle climate change on Wednesday, saying he would delay a ban on sales of new petrol cars to maintain the consent of the British people in the switch to net zero.
Carmakers, which have invested billions on electric vehicles, slammed Britain's move to delay a 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, saying it would disrupt supply chains and slow the transition to greener cars.

These are priced between £74 and £94 for Fiesta and Focus owners and will take just under an hour to programme.
Simon Hurr, Ford security specialist said the new scheme would help “protect more owners” of the firm's “most popular cars”.
He said: “The online availability of devices, which have no place in public hands, has long been a problem for Ford, our industry and crime fighters.
“We are pleased to extend our simple but effective solution, to help protect more owners of our most popular cars.”

Ford said owners should follow the new walkaround solution if they think the signal between their car fob and door is being tampered with. The walkaround can indicate where a divide is located and block its possible damage with immediate effect.
They believe at least two-thirds of all commercial vehicles will be for electric models by 2030.
The brand is set to launch their first fully-electric van, the Ford E-Transit in Spring next year.
The vehicle will be capable of up to 217 miles between charges but is set for a price tag of up to £36,000.
Mr Rowley said the changes have been made as the industry is “changing profoundly”.

He warned the changes will represent a "seismic challenge” but warned this was one the company could meet.
He said: “Our plan at Ford Motor Company is to turn around automotive operations, modernise everywhere and disrupting ourselves.
E10 contains a higher percentage of ethanol which can cause damage to components in older vehicles.
Tests from the Department for Transport (DfT) showed E10 can lead to degradation of fuel hose and seals, blacked fuel filters and damaged fuel pumps.
Carburettors and fuel tanks can become corroded by the new fuel while a car’s injectors could also become blocked.
The ACEA report has urged drivers to make sure they check their vehicle is compatible before topping up their cars with the new fuel.

The report said: “In countries that offer E10 petrol, before you fill your vehicle with petrol please check that your vehicle is compatible with the use of E10 petrol.
SMMT data placed the Volkswagen Golf as the third most popular car of 2020 with over 43,000 models sold.
Ford’s popular focus car was the fourth most popular model with a total of 39,372 sales recorded over the past year.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Nissan Qashqai and Mii were also popular among consumers with over 30,000 models sold.
Motorpoint's figures were slightly different with the Ford Transit the third most popular car in a new entry for 2020.

The Nissan Qashqai dropped two places to fourth in their analysis while the Ford Focus jumped four positions to fifth.
