i m craig melvin. this is turning out to be an historic fourth of july in the early hours of this morning, the first named hurricane of the 2014 season, a category 2 storm named arthur, hit north carolina s outer banks. the national hurricane center says this is the earliest a hurricane has ever made landfall during the atlantic season. that storm knocked down trees, knocked out power to about 44,000 homes and businesses so far. they are also caused some flash flooding as well. at this hour, road crews are out on the highways up and down the barrier islands. they are assessing the damage. right now that storm is back out at sea as you can see. it s been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane as it moves north. it is threatening to ruin or at least change the holiday plans farthure up the atlantic coast. we want to turn now to the latest in north carolina. for that we go to nbc s sarah dallof in kill devil hills. she s been reporting on the advance. and now the retreat of that s
