Oxfam India planned to avoid the provisions of the FCRA, 2010 by channelling funds through other FCRA-registered groups or through the for-profit consultancy route.

Foreign funds to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore are under the scanner of Union home ministry which has asked the CBI to probe the alleged violations of the foreign contribution regulation act (FCRA) by Oxfam India.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi stoked a fresh controversy on Thursday, remarking that the anti-Sterlite protests in the State in 2018 had been fuelled by foreign funds and was aimed at hindering progress.

Oxfam India allegedly routed funds to Centre for Policy Research  through its associates and employees in the form of commission, sources claimed.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi stoked a fresh controversy on Thursday, remarking that the anti-Sterlite protests in the state in 2018 had been fuelled by foreign funds and was aimed at hindering progress. His comment instantaneously drew an outcry from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies.

Oxfam India is fully compliant with Indian laws and has filed all its statutory compliances, said the NGO after the CBI inquiry was recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Union home ministry on Thursday recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the affairs of the Indian arm of the global NGO Oxfam for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, sources said.

Stoking yet another controversy, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi on Thursday termed the 2018 protests in Thoothukudi that led to the closure of the Vedanta-owned Sterlite Copper as “purely foreign-funded”. Sterlite Copper had accounted for 40 per cent of India’s copper production, and Ravi said it was done to hamper the country’s “growth.”

The Centre has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe Oxfam India over violation of foreign funding norms, sources said.
