Maintaining that sovereignty and integrity of India ought to prevail, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the validity of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2020, saying it’s open to a sovereign democratic nation to completely prohibit acceptance of foreign donations.

Parliament must be credited for having taken recourse to “corrective dispensation” for eradicating the mischief, which any sovereign country can ill-afford, the apex court said.

The Supreme Court has endorsed the Centre's Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2020, adding that accepting foreign donations "cannot be an absolute or even a vested right".

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had appeared for the Centre and said that the amendments have been made only for better regulation and monitoring of inflow and outflow of foreign funds.
