Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande on Tuesday said, India and African nations have strengthened their ties based on a mutually beneficial relationship encompassing a number of spheres.

He further added that Indian armed forces have been actively involved in a number of United Nations peacekeeping missions in Africa since 1965.

Manoj Pande said, that strengthening mutual capabilities in combating terrorism was one of the 10 guiding principles for cooperation.

Rajnath Singh was addressing the delegates at the strategically significant India-Africa Army Chiefs’ Conclave.

The second edition of the Africa-India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX- 2023) between India and 23 nations of the African continent commenced at Foreign Training Node, Aundh, Pune on Tuesday.

The joint exercise is in keeping with India's outreach to Africa, which commenced in 2008 through the India-Africa Summit and has been thereafter held in 2015 and 2019.

The Indian Army contingent comprises of troops from an Infantry Battalion from the Garhwal Rifles Regiment. The first edition of the exercise was held at Uzbekistan in November 2019.

The China factor has steadied the two nations’ strategic partnership, despite their differences of opinion on other matters.

Indian and Chinese troops scuffled along the disputed Himalayan border on Dec. 9 as the latter attempted to transgress Indian territory.
