Crown Mountain Park and Recreation District’s board of directors voted Wednesday to open discussions with Eagle County to see if a privately funded indoor sportsplex can be pursued at the popular midvalley site.
The board voted 5-0 to open preliminary discussions with county officials to determine if a formal application should be put in motion.
“This is an opportunity that our community could really benefit from,” said board member Leroy Duroux, a former Basalt mayor. “We have to figure out if it’s even possible.”
The board voted 4-1, with Jennifer Riffle dissenting, to explore the possibility at a specific site within the park. The 3.5-acre site is in a part of the park that a prior master plan identified as the best midvalley location for an indoor recreation facility.

That industry continues to be hit by the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, but there’s hope that historically strong support for the arts will give local arts organizations the financial boost they need as they navigate the road ahead.
“This is a real economy in this valley,” said Carbondale Arts Executive Director Amy Kimberly. “The creatives, the performing arts, music, venues, restaurants art adds millions. You just don’t realize the money that does come in.”
Carbondale Arts has been one of the organizers and supporting partners of a new “Arts Through It All” campaign to get through the interim. The initiative supports local artists by promoting shopping small and local for the holidays. It has also started a dialogue between art organizations from Aspen to Redstone about how to support each other during this difficult time.
Snow covers Highland Bowl in the early morning from Aspen Mountain on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk open on Friday. The Aspen Skiing Co. announced Thursday what terrain will be available on opening day. (Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times)
The recent snowfall will allow Aspen Highlands to make an impressive season debut on Friday, potentially including terrain in Highland Bowl.
The ski area will open with five chairlifts, “much” of the front side terrain as well as trails in Temerity and the Olympic side and possibly in the Bowl, according to Aspen Skiing Co.
“We are optimistic that a few runs in Temerity, and some of our steeper runs on the Olympic side (Deception, Why, Why Not) will be available,” Skico announced on its website Thursday. “We hope to have some of the G Zone runs in the Highland Bowl, however, we will delay if this approaching storm dictates that need for safety.”
