Historical human remains detection dogs and their handlers from Ottawa have searched the grounds of former residential schools in Quebec, as communities look for answers.
"I'm doing this to remember those who have already gone home to the spirit world, also, those who never made it home," said Chisasibi survivor Clara Napash, who started attending residential school at the age of two.
Cree officials in Chisasibi say that after extensive consultations with families and survivors, several sites associated with the first two residential schools in Quebec will be searched over the next two years using GPR and other technology.
Consultations were held locally in Chisasibi in November and the majority of survivors wanted to move forward with a ground penetrating radar search on Fort George Island in the wake of the discoveries of unmarked graves, said Chisasibi Deputy Chief Paula Napash.
