consequences will be severe and other people in this country, the oligarchs there need to know life will never be the same for them again. mike: in your view is the biden administration doing enough to tell vladimir putin if he invades ukraine and russia will pay a heavy price? yes, absolutely. i think the president has been very clear and resolute about the fact that what russia is doing is wrong and i think he s doing a good job of cooling our allies that are worried about this in that part of europe in the same direction and getting us all on the same page, which ultimately i think will be key. can t look like the united states and can t even look like it s the united states and the baltic states. it needs to look like the players in europe that don t want to see this happen that we are all in this together and that we will apply the same amount of pressure to russia to get mike: chairman of the joint chiefs said that kyiv could fall
territory in nato countries of. reporter: german chancellor schultz is scheduled to come to the white house tomorrow to discuss the ways to deter war. mike: alexandria, thank you. for more on the growing tensions between ukraine and russia and the us response i m joined by texas democratic congressman a member of the house armed services and energy and commerce committee. well,. yep. mike: congressman, how alarmed are you by the latest reporting out of ukraine? very worried about the latest reporting from ukraine. you know, i think long-term that it remains to be seen exactly what putin is up to. i just know see how this benefits him or russia for long-term growth. i do think he certainly has a certain level of nostalgia, but it needs to be reinforced to him that if he does this and if he goes ahead and invades, that the
trump administration actually made the situation a lot worse just by his dealing with putin. their very first meeting in helsinki, the fact that they played into a lot of the social media game and what have you come a lot of the disinformation instead of pushing back against that. i think trump sort of strengthened putin s hand and is partially to blame for where we are at today. mike: do you think putin s waiting for the olympics to end? he certainly could be. i don t think that as far as him being able to put together any sort of long-term strategic alliance that he thinks may benefit russia in the future with china but that it certainly does not make sense for him to try to invade now. he can be a wild card on a lot of these things and it s no telling where the man s head is because i think what he s doing now doesn t
military equipment they have not only on the ukrainian border but also in belarus with the build up their which to me it reinforces their intention to invade ukraine. mike: what our potential next steps from the house armed services committee perspective and what do you want to see in a final sanctions package to come out of congress? well, sure they will have some hearings to determine what are the options now that we see an invasion imminent. of course, i hope putin chooses otherwise, but i m a realist in believing that indeed he will attack. i think at that point we need to understand what are the full suite of options the administration is willing to put forward. they talk about those things now. they talk about efforts to bring allies in, to impact financial resources that russia has around the world, to impact the energy that they shipped to other nations, but i can tell you, i don t believe in
