Virginia Department of Education shoots down claims of eliminating accelerated math courses for equity plan

Some parents on Northern Virginia are asking whether the Commonwealth is eliminating advanced math classes.
RICHMOND, Va. - Are advanced math classes going away in Virginia for the sake of student equity?
It’s what many parents in Northern Virginia are asking after a Loudoun County school board member posted to social media that this is being considered in the Commonwealth.
According to board member Ian Serotkin, he learned of the change during last Tuesday’s briefing from staff on the Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI).
Virginia’s Department of Education announced that it will eliminate accelerated math classes in all public schools. It’s about Marxist “equity.” Some kids can’t make the grade so they will bring everyone else down to their level.
I think they should get rid of the NFL because some kids can’t make the NFL. While I’m at it, they should end medical school because some kids can’t get in.
Once they eliminate the classes in Virginia schools, the wealthy parents will pay for extra classes or maybe they’ll move. Only the people without the ability to move will be stuck with this inferior Marxist equity education.

The US system of mathematics education is unjust and originating in segregation and other forms of institutional systems of oppression, say equity activists offering to dismantle racism in math instruction and lower learning standards so that black, brown and Latino students may leg up. But will it work?
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is considering revamping the K-12 math curriculum statewide over the next few years in a bid to improve equity in mathematics learning opportunities. As many of you know, David Brooks and I are friends. I can tell you that it’s hard to find a more generous and decent man anywhere. That’s really true, and that, besides my innate loyalty to friends, is why I ball up my internal fist whenever I hear people criticize him harshly. And it’s why I’m not going to publish any comments on this blog that criticize him personally (as distinct from criticizing his ideas). But I also recognize that David is dispositionally and convictionally more liberal than I am, and far more optimist about the way of the world. This is a preface to say that his column today is halfway about me and people like me.
