NASA is poised to break the sound barrier once again after more than 7 decades. NASA's aeronautical innovators are gearing to break the sound barrier once more, but this time in a totally different fashion that may one day allow all of us to fly at speeds equal to or faster than any of the X-1 pilots who flew supersonically.

Supersonic commercial air travel started with Concorde in 1976, but there hasn't been another ultra-high-speed plane since the jet's demise in 2003.

Lockheed Martin and NASA are collaborating to build a supersonic aircraft with a sonic boom that tops out at seventy-five decibels, about the level of a door closing.

At the end of this year, when NASA plans to conduct the first test flight of the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) prototype aircraft, the project will be just four years old. That means it only took that much for the American space agency and its commercial partners to get from idea to real-life machine, and that gives us hope we’ll be seeing a return of civilian supersonic flight sooner than expected.

It shouldn’t be long now until NASA has the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) aircraft in the air for testing purposes, and that should mark an important moment in the history of aviation.
