[Courtesy] Many thought George Ndungu Koimburi was foolhardy when he decided to run in the Juja parliamentary byelection on the little-known People Empowerment Party ticket in President Uhuru Kenyatta's political backyard. The party is associated with President Uhuru Kenyatta's rebel MP in the neighbouring Gatundu South, Moses Kuria. A former chairman of the Kiambu County Liquor Board, the MP-elect did not have it easy.  At one point, he went into hiding from DCI sleuths who were reportedly looking for him over "questionable" academic papers. No stranger to politics, the soft-spoken man's landslide victory in the Juja parliamentary by-election on Tuesday affirmed his popularity in the president's backyard having tried his luck in 2017  (on Farmers’ Party ticket) when he lost to the late Francis Waititu (Wakapee).

The National Management Committee (NMC) yesterday directed the party’s disciplinary committee to begin the process that could lead to the expulsion of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire and Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga. In yesterday’s meeting at Jubilee headquarters, the NMC noted that the Gatundu South MP has been espousing the ideals of the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) in contravention of the Political Parties Act.

Waititu died on February 23 at MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi while undergoing treatment. He had brain cancer. President Uhuru Kenyatta made a brief visit to Kimbo to drum up support for the Jubilee candidate, Susan Njeri Wakapee. The Standard learnt that the President made a stopover after visiting his home in Ichaweri, Gatundu South.

Police Launch Manhunt for Moses Kuria's By-Election Candidate George Koimburi, a Juja by-election aspirant addresses the media in March 2021 File Police have launched a manhunt for Juja by-election candidate George Koimburi after the Kiambu Law Court issued a warrant of arrest against the politician.  The arrest warrant was issued after Koimburi failed to appear in court to answer four charges of forgery. Detectives attached to the case said that the suspect was either on a run or was in hiding.  Koimburi is seeking to vie on the Peoples Empowerment Party associated with Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria. Police accused the aspirant of forging certificates from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and the Jomo Kenyatta University of  Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
