Hyannis Catholic middle, high schools combine as St John Paul II name

Now the two schools operated by the Fall River Diocese will also share a common name. School officials announced this week that after a year-long process of feedback and revision, the decision was made to combine both schools under the name St. John Paul II School.   St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School, founded in 1996, and St. John Paul II High School, founded in 2007, each have established strong identities and reputations. When unified in 2013, we proceeded carefully to bring together each division s strengths to the point where we truly are one school from stem to stern,  said Christopher Keavy, president of St. John Paul II School in an email.

Dream of American citizenship comes true for Cape Cod woman

HYANNIS – When Geovanha Pinheiro walked into the gymnasium to begin her shift at St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School on Wednesday, students were there waiting for her. Having passed her U.S. citizenship test the day before, Pinheiro, a 43-year-old native of Brazil, was greeted with cheers and clapping from students lined up along the walls. Students dressed in red, white and blue. Some waved American flags. All of them cheered and called her name as she circled the gymnasium.   “Miss G, Miss G, Miss G,” they shouted.  Pinheiro put her hands to her masked face, surprised at the turnout. She raised her arm, pointing heavenward as she walked around the gym, waving to the kids.

Parents, school officials weigh in on the future of the snow day

FALMOUTH While many schools decided to take the day off on Thursday, others continued the learning at home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the Cape now have the capability to teach students remotely, raising the question if snow days should be a thing of the past.  For Katy Mehrtens daughter, a fifth grader at Morse Pond School, the thought of having no more snow days made her sad enough to make some remarks about it. For her son, a first grader at Teaticket Elementary School, it hasn’t even registered that it might be something to miss, she said.
