Philadelphia City Councilmember Cindy Bass, a three-term incumbent in Northwest Philly's 8th District, has won the Democratic primary against challenger Seth Anderson-Oberman, according to the Associated Press. Bass held a margin of just over 400 votes with about 95% of the vote counted. The district covers neighborhoods including Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy, Germantown, Nicetown-Tioga and Wissahickon. The 8th District race was the closest Democratic primary contest in 2023.
Incumbents Isaiah Thomas, Katherine Gilmore Richardson, Jim Harrity and newcomers Rue Landau and Nina Ahmad won the Democratic nominations Tuesday, May 16.
The May 16 primary elections for Philadelphia City Council featured races for all 17 seats, including seven at-large seats and 10 seats determined by geographic voting districts. On the Democratic side, the race for five at-large nominations is led by Isaiah Thomas, Katherine Gilmore-Richardson, Rue Landau, Nina Ahmad and Jim Harrity. Six district races were uncontested. Incumbents Cindy Bass, Quetcy Lozada and Anthony Philips lead their respective races. In the Republican at-large race, the leading five candidates are Drew Murray, Frank Cristinzio, Gary Grisafi, Jim Hasher and Mary Jane Kelly.
