A Kings Mountain Police officer is expected to recover after being shot Saturday night while responding to a suspicious person call near the country club in Kings Mountain. The suspected shooter also was injured in the shooting.
Kings Mountain Police Cpl. Frank Lee Whittington Jr. was taken to Atrium Health-Cleveland in Shelby after exchanging fire with an unidentified man after responding to a call about a suspicious person at a home on Downing Drive, said Kings Mountain Police Chief Lisa Proctor.
“We are very thankful that he is alive and that we are not planning funeral number three in the last week and a half for another law enforcement officer,” Proctor said.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. – A Kings Mountain police officer was shot Saturday evening near Kings Mountain Country Club. Corporal Frank Lee Whittington Jr. was wounded in his abdomen and taken to a hospital in Shelby where he is now recovering from surgery. The suspect was shot by the officer and transported to a hospital in Gastonia where he also required surgery.

Police responded to a call reporting a suspicious individual outside a residence on Downing Drive in Kings Mountain at 8:01 PM. The suspect headed towards the country club, where Whittington encountered the individual and the exchange of gunfire took place.
