Iowa Miss Amazing celebrates girls and women with disabilities

Bella Van Gorp stood on the Franklin Junior High stage Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, a beaming smile on her face and hands on her hips. The 19-year-old from Pella has participated in the Iowa Miss Amazing contest since she was 13 and knows how to play to the crowd. This year, as reigning Iowa Miss Amazing Teen Queen, it was Van Gorp s job to crown the new Teen Queen   Rachel Cogil, 17, of Jamaica. Miss Amazing is a national program for girls and women with disabilities. Morgan Tooley, state director for the Iowa Miss Amazing pageant, said the contest is designed to showcase their abilities and celebrate their talents.

Winners were the 400 free relay of Lance Hoff, Mark Schmitz, Dave Wise and Steve Piepgras in 3:19.64; the 200 medley relay of Evan Kaneski, Hoff, Schmitz and Piepgras in a meet record 1:42.4; Hoff 21.64 in the 50 free; and Piepgras 56.98 in the 100 fly.

Tickets on sale for TEDx Des Moines in May; volunteers needed BY BUSINESS RECORD STAFF Wednesday, December 23, 2020 2:56 PM Tickets are on sale and speakers are being finalized for the upcoming TEDx Des Moines event, scheduled for May 11 at Franklin Junior High. TEDx is an independently organized event that brings together speakers to share innovative and disruptive ideas. The theme “Through a Different Lens” aims to provide a platform for diverse perspectives and amplify unheard voices, organizers said in the event announcement. Organizers at Think Engage Des Moines received nearly 140 speaking applications and are currently in the selection process. The event is designed to take place in person with an accompanying livestream; however, it may later changed to a completely virtual event in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines at the time. Those interested in volunteering for the event can learn more online.
