By the end of this week Buffalo City Municipality plans to adhere to the terms of a court order to tackle a dump of medical waste with the potential to contaminate the metro's largest drinking dam, Bridle Drift.

BCM DA ward 28 councillor Frederick Pohl has criticised the city for spending large amounts of money on a fencing project on “the road to nowhere” in Quenera Drive in Beacon Bay, while “neglecting road and sewerage” maintenance. In a video on his Facebook page, Pohl said: “BCM has appointed a contractor to install clear-view fencing around the road to nowhere.

It took about two hours for the police to arrive after a walker came across a decomposed body of a man in Beacon Bay on Wednesday.

There are not enough waste transfer stations to meet the demands of BCM residents, the municipality admitted in the recently adopted 2022-2023 Integrated Development Plan. According to the IDP, BCM has two general waste landfill sites — Roundhill landfill site outside Ntabozuko and the Qonce landfill site — and two garden refuse sites — one in Beacon Bay and the privately owned Rieger’s site in Gonubie.

Buffalo City Metro has, so far, spent R328m on its electricity and water smart meter projects that started in 2018, while metro customers complain that their billing has only got worse, with many complaining of being massively overcharged. While BCM continues its rollout of the new system, controversy remains about the accuracy of the meters.
