Two Russian aircraft reportedly taken out on Sunday were Moscows "eyes" above Ukraine, Kyivs military has said.

Briton Aiden Aslin, who was held prisoner by pro-Russian forces, told Newsweek that Moscow is hoarding battlefield resources out of the range of HIMARS rockets.

"Both are better aircraft than the MiG-29 and would represent an enhancement for the Ukrainian air force," one expert told Newsweek.

If Australia supplies F-18s to Kyiv, it could mean Ukraine also getting AIM-132 air-to-air missiles, described by one expert as "an exceptionally good weapon."

As Kyiv gets closer to receiving the advanced fighter jets, some experts have said the aircraft alone will not be enough to gain air superiority.

Kyiv has asked for 200 F-16 aircraft, according to reports, and President Volodymyr Zelensky has doubled down on requests for a "coalition of fighter jets."

There are "lots of challenges, lots of questions," remaining around F-16s even as Ukraine appears closer than ever to securing Western fighter jets.

The Su-35s are adapted from Moscows Su-27 jets and are considered to be among Russias most advanced 4.5 generation fighters.

A "dark day" for Ukraines Supreme Court may yet increase the chances of President Volodymyr Zelensky securing further Western aid.
