British pop giants Duran Duran headlined a glitzy Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham as more than 5 000 athletes braced for battle.

Prince Charles was accompanied by his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as he opened the Commonwealth Games on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.
