A new gallery celebrates the student nurses from Brewster Hospital in Jacksonville, once the only place in Florida where a Black nurse could train.

Cecil Louise Wright was a Brewster baby.  Almost 80 years ago she was born at Jacksonvilles old Brewster Hospital, a medical facility for African Americans founded in 1901. At age 19 she returned there to work while attending Edward Waters College and has since been an employee at each of Brewsters successor hospitals — Duval County Hospital, Methodist Medical Center and University Medical Center, which merged with Gainesville-based Shands Healthcare in 1999 and in 2013 was renam...
