The new residential community that SummerHill Homes plans to build in Palo Alto bears little resemblance to most of the other housing applications that the city has been fielding over the past year.

Plans were revealed last April to demolish the giant, temple-shaped Fry's superstore — which at the time was not yet closed — and replace it with a campus of seven 135-foot tall office buildings.

The City Council has a rare opportunity to exercise some power over the future of 340 Portage Ave. site for potential housing after 15 years of helplessly watching commercial uses occupy it and leave.

When Palo Alto considers on Monday a new vision for a section of the Ventura neighborhood, it will find itself choosing between alternatives that range from economically infeasible to politically unpopular.
