SINGAPORE (Bernama): A 46-year-old Malaysian who was on the run for more than 20 years was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with effect from the expiry of his existing sentence meted out in 1999, for offences punishable under the Immigration Act and the Penal Code.

Judge Wynante Adrien-Roberts of Dominica High Court decided not to grant bail to Mehul Choksi after conclusion of the submissions made by both the sides. The court also highlighted that Mehul Choksi didnt offer any strong surety before the court while he sought bail and hes a flight risk too, Antigua Newsroom reported.

In its 10-page affidavit filed by CBIs Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sharada Raut, the central agency has stated that Choksi is a fugitive from justice. The agency has told the court that they have made attempts to arrest Choksi, “but his whereabouts were unknown, and he was not available in India”. A red corner notice (RCN) has been issued against Choksi by the Interpol on their requests.

Choksi had approached the high court after the magistrate had rejected his bail petition
