NEWTON The Sussex County Community College Board of Trustees approved a resolution to apply for a $1 million state grant to benefit the college s growing technical education program.
The measure passed 8-0 at the trustees monthly meeting on Tuesday. This is very exciting, trustee Jim Hofmann, a STEM teacher and robotics coach at Newton High School, said before he voted yes.
Board Vice President Tyler Morgus abstained due to his employment at Thorlabs, one of the companies that partners with the college to offer the programs.
With the board s approval, SCCC officials can now apply for a grant from the Securing Our Children s Future Bond Act. The act was signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2018 to augment what is happening in secondary education and higher education with respect to career and technical education, according to SCCC President Jon Connolly.
