The installation of three sculptured artworks along the Strand promenade in Beach Road last week signalled the second phase of the Sculpture Walk, which aims to beautify the Helderberg and create awareness of its rich history and culture.

The proposed conversion of a section of Strand’s Beach Road into a one-way during the construction of the second phase of the sea wall will not be implemented by the City of Cape Town.

Demolition of derelict sections of the Strand jetty, which started on Monday (5 December), marked the end of an era for the community, many of whom reacted with dismay and disappointment that one of the Helderberg’s most recognisable landmarks would soon be no more.
Although only sections of the dilapidated structure are being removed, the entire shape of the linear jetty is now dotted with gaps and it appears to be only a matter of time before the rest follow suit.

A group of Strand residents residing in apartments along Beach Road, Haarlem Street and the immediate vicinity have outright rejected the City of Cape Town’s proposal to convert a portion of Beach Road into a one-way.

The foul stench of raw sewage along the beach at the point where the Lourens River meets the ocean is an odour residents, beachgoers and holidaymakers have to contend with for months on end.

Acase of malicious damage to property has been opened with the Strand police following a brazen and senseless desecration of what has become an iconic Assemble sculpture along the Strand Beach promenade.
