U.S. pundits keep comparing Washington to a war zone, but people who know war disagree

Print article A massive security operation is underway in Washington, D.C., ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, two weeks after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol. As images of National Guard troops circulate online, some in the United States have compared the capital to a war zone. The commentary has drawn pushback from people who have lived or worked in areas actually beset by conflict, who say such remarks are misleading and trivialize the reality of war. “It’s extremely degrading to people who have actually lived through war and foreign occupation and have actually seen tanks rolling down their streets and foreign soldiers occupying their land or their own soldiers deployed against them,” said Jasmine el-Gamal, a former Pentagon adviser who worked in Iraq as a translator following the U.S. invasion in 2003. “That’s a conflict situation. That’s a war zone.”

comes out the calculation of the administration is it won't matter. i think it might. it depends on what happens. the only explanation for all of the secrecy here is that it is likely that a large number of these are c.i.a., undercover and you don't want them out there. you have to protect secrets and identities. i understand that. it's likely there are at least a few who are not and hiding their identities i think is absurd and it is not going to help them. >> bret: let's go on to investigation. egyptian authorities are holding what they believe to be one of key suspects in the benghazi attack. so far, u.s. authorities have not had had access to this guy. he goes by different names. amed and gamal but the bottom line is they think she tied to the benghazi attack. still much like we saw elsewhere
