Resident Evil Village launch sales in Japan were series s worst since 2005

Resident Evil franchise,  Resident Evil Village, launched to critical acclaim on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox and managed to ship over 3 million units in its first four days. Despite all this, Resident Evil Village sales in Japan were the series’s worst since the release of Resident Evil 4 on GameCube in 2005 (not including other platforms). All of this was revealed through Famitsu’s boxed game sales data, which details the performance of Village‘s PlayStation 4 and 5 versions with a combined total of 149,884 copies sold. Launch week retail sales of Resident Evil Village are the lowest for a mainline RE title in Japan since the original release of RE4 on the GameCube, third lowest of the series, barely on par with that and the original game.

JP: Switch is the only console to sell more in 2020 than 2019

Holding its own As you can see by this chart, the numbers for the other platforms are far lower. The PS4 fared the best, though its sales still dropped by 54%. The 3DS dropped by 68%, though this isn’t a huge surprise seeing that it was formally discontinued back in 2019 after nearly a decade on the market. The Xbox One dropped like a rock, selling only a measly 3,558 units (-56%) for the whole year. This chart also shows us how many units for the next-gen consoles sold before the year wrapped up. Rather unsurprisingly, the PS5 reigns supreme with 265,782 units, leaving the Xbox Series X|S consoles together to account for only 31,558 units. Xbox has long had a rough time in Japan. These numbers may seem low for brand-new consoles, but keep in mind that, like everywhere else, units were very hard to come by.
