Groundout Three different relievers simply couldn’t find the plate, issuing five free passes including two that forced home runs. And when they did stumble into the strike zone, Matt Chapman shredded a double (106.2 mph EV) to knock home a pair. That rally blew the game open, but just to be safe, Jed Lowrie singled home one more in the 7th inning for his team-leading 12th RBI. In the year 2021. It’s time for San Antonio Spurs at Toronto Raptors Share this story Photos by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our I wonder if the Raptors play ‘O Canada’ before their games in Tampa? I would think they would, but ‘True North strong and free’ doesn’t quite hit the same in the Florida panhandle. Maybe they can get Aron Baynes to drink a Molson or...

*** While the final result was familiar, this game followed a script we haven’t yet seen in 2021. The A’s fell behind early, spotting Arizona a 5-0 lead by the 2nd inning. But the D’Backs never scored again, and Oakland launched a late comeback against the bullpen that put them over the top plus insurance. The first run seemed harmless enough, as Stephen Piscotty blasted a solo homer in the 4th. They were still down by a lot, but at least they definitely wouldn’t be shut out. Don...

That was Lowrie’s first homer since 2018, and at that exact moment every Mets fan threw up in their mouths just a little, like Obi-Wan Kenobi sensing something bad has happened. The A’s loaded the bases after that, and Elvis Andrus hit a rocket at 107.3 mph EV, but it went straight at a glove for an out and they got nothing more in the inning. Houston answered back with a rally of a walk, a weak single, and a grounder that would have been a double play if not for a heavy defensive shift. I...

*** For eight innings the A’s couldn’t find the plate, and they collected only three hits in the process. In the 3rd and 5th they put together rallies, but both times Houston was able to retire Matt Olson to escape the jams, in Olson’s return to the lineup after missing a couple games to a banged knee. Oakland finally pushed across a couple runs in the 9th, on an RBI double by Stephen Piscotty and then an RBI pinch-hit single by Jed Lowrie. Unfortunately it was only enough to avoid th...

*** The A’s opened the day with an 0-6 record, having lost each of their first six games of the season in thorough fashion. That tied them with the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics for the longest futility streak to open a campaign, and in 120 seasons of club history no A’s team had ever started 0-7. In order to avoid that dubious distinction, they’d need to overcome reigning NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer and the defending world champion Dodgers. The first step was keeping the opponent off...
