Yesterday, Belize's Garifuna community marked Garifuna Exile Day, a poignant anniversary commemorating 227 years since their ancestors were forcibly removed from their homeland. The National Garifuna Council released a statement highlighting the harrowing journey: "2248 Garifuna souls. leaving behind the remains of 2090 of our brothers and sisters who perished on the island of Balliceaux."
