The Gary Common Council is facing a federal lawsuit over failing to redistrict.

Gary Mayor Jerome Prince made his intention to run for reelection official Thursday when he filed with the Lake County Board of Elections for the office.

A lawsuit seeking an emergency injunction to postpone candidacy filing deadlines — or the May primary itself — until a new council map is drawn for the city of Gary was filed Wednesday against the Gary Common Council.

A request Wednesday by one councilman to postpone a decision over a contract for a lobbyist for the Gary Common Council prompted the Board of Works and Public Safety to defer the matter until February.

Five individuals were on the ballot for Lake County clerk.

The 80-year-old former judge and incumbent clerk hasn’t been seen publicly since he suffered multiple skull fractures in a Jan. 15 fall at his Crown Point apartment.
