Massachusetts is on a mission. The state is planting thousands of trees in gateway cities, including New Bedford. It's part of the Greening the Gateway Cities Program.

The committee suggested a 3-to-1 planting ratio for new trees and a a defined tree canopy goal for Worcester by January 2025 at the latest.

A statewide initiative to add trees to urban landscapes has seen thousands planted in former industrial centers — but it seems New Bedford is falling behind.

New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in Boylston received a $70,559 grant from Massachusetts’ Greening the Gateway Cities Program to plant 100 trees in Worcester and conduct outreach to residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations in the Main South, Grafton Hill, and Bell Hill neighborhoods.
