MORONGO VALLEY CSD CANCELS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR THIS YEAR

The Morongo Valley Community Services District board of directors held its regular monthly meeting last night. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has the details… At last night’s meeting, the board discussed and approved the district’s 2019-2020 fiscal year audit. The report showed the district to be in a financially positive position despite slightly higher expenses than revenues for the year. The presenter advised the board to plan for potential shortfalls in the future and Director Johnny Tolbert suggested the board address recommendations on the audit at a future meeting. The board also set Tuesday, May 11 at 6 p.m. as the date and time for a town hall meeting to discuss the status of the CSD and fundraising for the Morongo Valley Fire Department.

No one was injured when a mobile home caught fire in Joshua Tree Wednesday morning. County Fire Battalion Chief Mike McClintock said crews from Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Yucca Mesa were called to the 6100 block of Valley View about 10:15 a.m. where they found smoke showing from a double-wide mobile home. Firefighters found a room and its contents on fire, with flames extending into the attic space above. The blaze was knocked down in about 15 minutes. McClintock said the home was under renovation at the time of the fire, and the cause appears to be accidental. A mobile home under renovation was damaged by fire in Joshua Tree Wednesday.

MORONGO VALLEY CSD RE-ELECTS INCUMBENTS, DISCUSSES SOFTBALL, GATHERINGS

The Morongo Valley Community Services District board of directors tackled numerous topics at last night’s nearly four-hour board meeting, including electing a new board president and vice president. The board unanimously re-elected current President Gayl Swarat and Vice President Christina Brook back to their respective positions. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has more from the meeting… At last night’s marathon meeting, the board also created an ad hoc committee including President Gayl Swarat and Vice President Christina Gorke to determine how to spend a recent $180,000 grant for updates to Covington Park. The committee will collect recommendations on how to best use the funds with the hopes of completing the park updates in time for summer 2021. The board tabled discussions on possibly holding a 2021 softball season until its March meeting. The board is expected to allow planning for the season to begin with the understanding that the season may not take place depending on COVID-
