The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a record-breaking $299,997,000 fine imposed on an international network of companies for placing five billion robocalls to more than 500 million phone numbers over three months in 2021.

The FCC ordered a record $300 million forfeiture, but whether and when that money will be paid is, as always, something of an open question.

After a months-long investigation, the FCC has decided to go ahead with its proposed record-setting $300 million fine against “the largest illegal robocall operation” the agency had ever encountered. This is the largest fine ever issued by the FCC, due to the massive scope and illegality of the robocalling operation.

Robocallers were already banned for life and unable to pay previous fines.
