The Anne Arundel County Council will take up a final slew of amendments Monday night to the next General Development Plan, including one that would update the document’s equity statement to be more specific the county’s history of slavery and how its legacy affects water access.

The General Development Plan is a two-decade forward-looking document that details the county’s desires and plans for development.

The Anne Arundel County Council will take up a resolution calling on the county executive to require the police chief to livestream police trial board hearings as part of a broader commitment to transparency.

A “loophole” in Anne Arundel County’s forest conservation law could soon be closed if a county council bill requiring approval for clearing certain vegetation in sensitive areas is successful.It would ensure that the 2019 forest conservation bill penalties would still impact developers who cleared forest in violation, even if that clearing took place before they submitted a development application.

Anne Arundel County was hailed as a leader in forest conservation with the enactment of the Forest Conservation Act in 2019. However, the act was just one step forward in the effort to preserve forests and other natural resources. Next week the County Council considers two bills that are the next steps.

A host of Anne Arundel County residents and stakeholders came before the Anne Arundel County Council Monday night to voice priorities for the General Development Plan, which will be debated by the council over the next two months.Residents and activists and lobbyists alike questioned Plan 2040′s implementation order, warned against being overly prescriptive, and called for amendments. The council voted to hold the bill to allow for more time to work on the bill and more public hearings.
