How well did you do any wrong? how well did you do in north korea? im a pretty hawkish guy but after 18 years, its okay to reevaluate our commitment in afghanistan. it makes perfect sense to me, but im just urging the president dont ignore sound military advice. you can reduce our presence in afghanistan but if you leave afghanistan, al qaeda and isis are coming after us. >> bret: so did he fire him or did bolton resign? >> i dont know what i dont think it really matters. at the end of the day i...

Himself with his own people. so i think he handled it as diplomatically as he could, but its, you know, once again, we have an unconventional president doing unconventional things. >> what happens inside an administration, if youre the national security adviser john bolton, who said the test was in violation of u.n. resolutions, if john bolton said it was a big deal, then to have your boss, the president, walk out on the world stage and say, eh? >> well, you know, for this administration, its an...

Been often. yes, he has 38%. his base may be happy. he is the president of the united states. there is more than 38% of us, clearly. he does not govern for the majority of the country and we all feel it. what happened on november 6th is that people responded. they responded in a resounding way giving democrats the majority of the house. hes going to feel that. theres going to be accountability and going to be a different year in 2019 though he is going to continue to be unhinged. >> i want to go...

>> you think hes a liar? >> i dont think he tells the truth. >> is trump immoral in your view? >> i think he is. >> mcchrystal calls him immoral and essentially a liar. john kelly has reportedly suggested on many occasions that trump isnt up to the task of being president. mattis i think in the kindest interpretation of his resignation letter took issue with trumps approach to security issues. if four-star generals wont stand by him, who will? i ask in this context, in addition to defense secret...

I campaigned on getting out of syria and other places. now when i start getting out, the fake news media or some failed generals who were unable to do the job before i arrived liked to complain about me and my tactics which are working. just doing what i said i was going to do. ill let you pick what you want to start with because theres many things there. >> its hard to know where to go. as an admiral, i have to say, its pretty amazing to watch the generals get thrown overboard from the ship. it...

Month. general mcmaster is already gone. michael, you and i talked about trump appointing these generals in the first place, why he loves generals. you pointed out he went to a military school. why do you think hes pushing them away? >> theres a real irony. the military is the ultimate team and donald trump is not a team player. hes never been a team player and now he should be on what would be team america or team usa defending our values, promoting our interests around the world in a consisten...

Were not going to be able to carry on doing what were doing and it means that isis is going to come back. were good at seizing the objective. were terrible at holding on to it. this president more than anybody is terrible at holding on to the objective. great consternation not just there and not just in that part of the world, but everywhere elsewhere we have treaty commitments, defense commitments. most other countries are terribly concerned about our inability now to project you on power. what...

The resignation letter, had been pointing to james mattis and general kelly, general mcmaster, three are gone. what happens with gop? >> sirus vance resigned because disagreed releasing hostages in april of 1990, policy decision. but p didnt say i dont think jimmy carter has best interests of america at heart, i dont think hes reliable and i have no respect for him. its policy decision, thats important resignations over that great american tradition. not what james mattis did. said what i disagr...
