Role for GPs in heart-risk hunt

Date Time Role for GPs in heart-risk hunt GP clinics could be enlisted to help identify patients unknowingly at risk of a premature heart attack and early death due to an inherited condition, a Department of Health-funded study has found. The newly published research found that GP clinics could not only play a pivotal role in identifying patients with the condition familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), but also in managing their ongoing treatment. Lead researcher and Notre Dame Professor of General Practice Research, Tom Brett said FH was a lifelong condition in which the liver’s ability to remove low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) – commonly known as ‘bad cholesterol’ – from the blood was severely impaired, increasing the patient’s risk of premature coronary heart disease.

Researchers call for improvements to working culture and conditions for junior doctors

E-Mail Researchers are calling for changes to working culture and conditions for junior doctors in the UK after their new research has highlighted a lack of access to clinical and emotional support. The call comes as a University of Birmingham-led team of researchers, including experts from Keele University, University College London, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the Universities of Leeds and Manchester, carried out a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with 21 NHS junior doctors. All participants, 16 of whom were women and five were men, self-identified as having chronic stress and/or mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.

Concerning drop in the number of people with mental health problems seeking help revealed

E-Mail During April 2020, while the UK was in full lockdown, there was a drop of more than a third in the number of people seeking help for mental illness or self-harm according to research involving 14 million people registered at general practices across the four nations of the UK which was published today in The Lancet Public Health*. The research, 'Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on primary care-recorded mental illness and self-harm episodes in the UK: a population-based cohort study', was conducted by the National Institute for Health Research Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (NIHR GM PSTRC). The Centre is a partnership between The University of Manchester and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. The research was jointly funded by the NIHR and UK Research and Innovation as part of their COVID-19 Rapid Response Initiative.
