FLINT, MI Rosie the Riveter has taken her place with other Flint automotive pioneers memorialized with a $40,000 bronze statue that was unveiled Friday, Jan. 29, at Bishop Airport.
Sculpted by Joe Rundell, the statue shows Rosie, a symbol of women’s empowerment and American feminism, wearing a collared shirt and bandana, striking a signature pose flexing her bicep.
Her image was used in a campaign that recruited women to work for defense industries during World War II, including converted General Motors plants in the Flint area and elsewhere as men enlisted to fight in World War II.
