There was suppose to be some relief at the beginning of January when drivers started registering their cars in order to keep them legal on the road.
That relief in the form of not having to pass a vehicle emission inspection never came, leaving several Onslow County residents wondering why.
On June 5, Governor Roy Cooper signed into law House Bill 85, which was co-sponsored by State Reps. Phil Shepard (R-Onslow) and George Cleveland (R-Onslow). The bill removed emission inspections and only required safety inspections for cars in Onslow. According to the bill, the law was set to begin on Jan. 1, 2021.
