Ion (Şerban Ionescu), un ţăran sărac din satul Prislop, vrea să intre şi el în rândul celor bogaţi. Planul său este de a-l sili pe Vasile Baciu (Petre Gheorghiu), unul dintre bogătaşii satului, să i-o dea de soţie pe fiica sa, Ana (Ioana Crăciunescu), şi, o dată cu ea, şi pământurile. Ana rămâne însărcinată, iar Ion aşteaptă momentul tocmelii. În acelaşi timp, Ion e îndrăgostit pătimaş de Florica (Sorina Stănculescu), o fată frumoasă, dar săracă. Ion ar dori şi zestrea Anei şi iubirea Floricăi. Până la urmă, Ion se căsătoreşte cu Ana, care, dispreţuită de toţi, se va sinucide, iar Florica se căsătoreşte cu un fecior bogat, Gheorghe Buluc (Valentin Teodosiu), pe care însă nu-l iubeşte. Ion, încercând într-o noapte să se strecoare în patul ei, va cădea răpus de loviturile lui Gheorghe.
