Four contests emerged among elective-officer positions up for grabs in Swampscott s 2021 municipal election, said Town Clerk Susan Duplin after she certified candidates nomination papers.  Barring candidates withdrawing their names, voters will see a mixture of political newcomers and incumbents who will be contested and uncontested on the Tuesday, April 27 municipal election ballot. Atlantic Avenue resident Charlie Patsios and incumbent Michael McClung will compete for a yearlong term as Swampscott town moderator. Incumbent Peter Spellios faces a challenge from Elmwood Road resident Mary Webster for a three-year term on the Swampscott Board of Selectmen.

Swampscott s 2021 election season is earnestly getting underway: As of press time, a half-dozen residents had pulled nomination papers from Swampscott Town Clerk Susan Duplin’s office for town-officer seats.  In this election cycle, eight town-officer seats and at least 108 Town Meeting member seats open up in the Tuesday, April 27 municipal election.  For the three-year term opening on Swampscott Board of Selectmen, Mary Webster of Elmwood Road pulled nomination papers, setting up a potential challenge against Peter Spellios.  Spellios, the chairman of and the most senior member serving on the Swampscott Board of Selectmen, has pulled papers for re-election to a third terms.  

Benefactors keep Kent library, association afloat during challenging 2020

BY LYNN MELLIS WORTHINGTON REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN February 1, 2021 133 KENT – The Kent Memorial Library and the Kent Library Association were able to survive 2020 thanks to the financial generosity of nearly 200 people who together gave $60,000, which was matched by two individuals and helped make up for canceled fundraisers. “Our three major event fundraisers the book sale, gala and car raffle all had to be canceled,” said Jim Blackketter, the library co-president. “Two great friends of the library, Betty Ruddy, a board member and chair of the Development Committee, and Ned Babbitt pledged $60,000 in matching funds.” The library celebrated the end of the calendar year at its annual meeting Jan. 18, highlighting its finances and its programming that continues throughout the pandemic. Library Director Sarah Marshal said virtual programming was developed to thank the townspeople.
