NAPA VALLEY’S HISTORY
Napa Valley has long been farmland. It just wasn’t always vineyards. Once, its primary outputs were prunes and walnuts. Wine grapes became a part, if not the dominating role, of Napa’s agricultural identity beginning in the mid-1800s, thanks to fur trapper George C. Yount, reportedly the first to plant grapes here.
There were about 140 wineries in Napa by the late 19th century, but then came the grape virus phylloxera and, later, Prohibition. The region’s modern history indeed, American wine’s recent history began in earnest in the 1960s. It was then that Napa Valley established the country’s first-ever Agricultural Preserve, a recognition that this land’s excellent suitability for farming was something worth protecting.
