CANTON – Standing on Fifth Street NW in downtown Canton, artist Tommy Morgan described the inspiration for the football-themed banner mural towering over him from the side of a brick building.
A tribute to late NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Morgan said during Tuesday s formal unveiling that he set out to capture the joy of the man who is credited with helping to make professional football the most popular sport in America today.
Turning around, the Stark County artist gestured at Rozelle and said football teams on each side of the sprawling art piece represent the NFL and AFL before a merger the commissioner negotiated in 1966.
