The theme of this years Georgia History festival is about the importance of place in georgia, and were going to be really focusing today on the experience of the cherokee people in Georgia History. What happened to them and the way that georgians have remembered their history and their experience particularly with removal coming forward all the way up into the present. I want to welcome dr. Hes a professor of history at western Carolina University where he teaches courses on native american and United States history. pandemic lockdowns that harmed children, closed businesses and churches even, the endless re-upping of emergency covid powers, the destruction of historical markers and status. the use of big tech as top defenseers for the cart regime, all of this, all of it points to one ugly inescapable conclusion. our government is being run by a kadri of powerful post-american forces. our current political leadership acts as though our constitution and the freedoms recollected by that constitution are no longer valid. there will always be a reason for them to ignore our constitution these days, like systemic racism, climate change or another covid vary gentleman, maybe gun violence, january 6th. and they won t explicitly say it, at least not yet, but they don t want us to live under a constitution that leaves the primary decision making to the people of the 50 states. nor do they want the designation american citizen to really have any special meeting at all for any of us. so we ll retain

I want to thank the Shenandoah Valley battlefields association for asking me to speak about somebody and something i had no idea when i started hitting my phd would become such an important part of my life. I cannot get away from general sherman. The more i talk about it, the more people will be to talk more about it. I will have to change topics at some point and move into another area, but he is a fascinating person. And a fascinating topic. I am also delighted to see so many folks here. And that you care this much about the civil war, battlefields, and preserving the battlefields. One of my favorite things to do is to hike battlefields. I think its wonderful to get out, enjoy the outdoors and you can unite those two things. The outdoors and the study of the civil war, theres nothing else like it. The two sides are drawn, but one very significant thing happens before the general election. The momentum on the field of battle turns. If theres single critical event, it is the fall of atlanta, which had been the object of Union Attention since the spring, fall of atlanta on the second of september. This is immediate greeted with jubilation across the north, and may have been the single thing what turns the tied of the northern opinion. In the election that follows, you see two very queer strategies. If you are a democrat, youre going to emphasize race. What northern democrats are going to do throughout the election of 1864 is constantly remind northern voters this is an unne
