The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, yesterday revealed that the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantity in Chad, Niger Republic and the Central African Republic, inspired the companyâs recent push to find the commodity in the north.
Speaking at the 56th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, the NNPC helmsman noted that the national oil company ramped up its efforts after President Muhammadu Buhari, ordered it to find ways to increase the countryâs reserves to 40 billion barrels from its current 36 billion barrels.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said his regime has discovered that criminals have infiltrated the mining industry in the country.
Buhari said this on Tuesday while declaring open the 56th annual international conference and exhibition of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The theme of the conference was: ‘Responsible exploration and exploitation of mineral resources in a secured environment’.
His address was read by the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah.
The President said since most mining activities were taking place in remote places, it was easy for criminals to infiltrate the mining industry.

He added that the money made from the industry was being used to fund criminal activities to the detriment of the economy of the country and its security.
The President made this known while declaring open the 56th annual international conference and exhibition of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
Buhari stated that apart from the security implications of the criminals on the economy, their actions were affecting the security of lives and property of the people in many ways.

He stated this while declaring open the 56th annual international conference and exhibition of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), held at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan.
President Buhari who spoke through the Minister of State for Mines and Steel, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, said the mining and agriculture sectors have huge economic potentials in creating well-paid jobs and wealth for people in the country.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), on Tuesday, says plans were underway to commence oil exploration activities in the Anambra platform and Dahomey Basins.
This was even as it said exploration activities were expanded in inland basins covering Gongola, Benue, Bida and Sokoto Basins in over four years.
The Corporation’s Group Managing Director (GMD), Mele Kyari, stated this while delivering a keynote address at the 56th Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS) Conference.
He said the Corporation has commenced a data review of both basins while noting the recent discovery of commercial quantities of hydrocarbon in the Kolmani area of the Middle Benue Trough.
